FORUM FOR SATELLITE CAMPUS DIRECTORS

FORUM FOR DIRECTORS OF SATELLITE CAMPUSES
In the National Association for Distance and Open Education of South Africa (NADEOSA), a interest group for satellite campus directors was called together at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) in Bloemfontein where the President of NADFEOSA, Mr. Tony Mays (far right on the photo) addressed them. The meeting was inter alia attended by Prof Ernst van Biljon, the campus director of the George Satellite campus of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth (left on photo) and Prof John Shongwe, campus director of the Nelspruit satellite campus of the Tswane University of Technology (TUT) (second from the left). Dr. Kallie de Beer of the CUT), convener, stands next to Prof Shongwe of TUT. In the case of the CUT, this university has a hybrid satellite campus in Welkom and collaborated via its “satellite” facility in Kimberley with the National Institute for Higher Education in the Northern Cape (NIHE). Two new fully fledged universities are currently developed from the two respective satellites in Nelspruit and Kimberley. The Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the University of the Free State (UFS) and the University of the North West (UNW) are part of the NIHE initiative while the University of Pretoria and the TUT are part of the process in Nelspruit. These two examples are evident of the single higher education system of the Department for Higher education and which operates according to the Higher Education Act (101) of the Republic of South Africa.
